Limitedness describes my view of the environment of teaching and learning mathematics in South Africa. Mathematics education has been battling with: questionable content knowledge; high numbers of ‘out-of-field’ and ‘out-of-phase’ teachers; and limited curricular resources. The current presentation zooms in on limitedness around the use of curricular resources by these teachers. An important question for consideration over and above the appropriateness of existing curricular resources, is what it would take to develop these teachers’ capacities for designing productive lessons. The presentation will outline research which has been conducted with a group of teachers on their relationships with their textbooks; on critical factors influencing teachers’ use of curricular resources; and, on the fitness for purpose of available curricular resources.
