The algebraic cobordism ring of an algebraic variety is constructed following the guidance given by complex cobordism of manifolds, with some important differences. The algebraic theory has the analog of many of the important structural properties enjoyed by the topological version, including a universal property and a close relation with algebraic K-theory. We will describe the algebraic theory and some of its applications to problems in algebraic geometry and quadratic forms.
