The epiSTEMe project has been designing a research-based intervention intended to help teachers and students to develop effective use of dialogic approaches to classroom teaching and learning in lower-secondary mathematics and science. Broadly, by a ‘dialogic’ approach we mean one in which different points of view are taken seriously, and students are encouraged to talk in an exploratory way that supports development of understanding. In this particular project we are also seeking more specifically to strengthen ‘dialogue’ between mathematics and science, and between everyday and disciplinary ideas. My talk will outline the thinking behind the epiSTEMe approach, examine the approach in action, and analyse the challenges it raises, bearing in mind the project brief to develop educative curriculum materials and professional development activities suitable for implementation at scale in English schools.
