Abstract
At the colloquium, we would like to share our experiences with one of our newly developed SLEs, the „Bamboo Number“ exercise, which is derived from Fibonacci’s sequences, with a Japanese twist! For Japanese people, bamboos symbolize new growth and life, and we expect mathematical patterns will grow in children’s minds through investigating the „Bamboo Number“. In our pilot study, Japanese 2nd grade children eagerly engaged in a series of problems with „Bamboo Numbers“, and discovered many patterns by themselves, including some which we had not expected them to find! At the colloquium, we will present and discuss details of our analysis of the children’s activities and what patterns they found.
