We deal with the design of a magnetic ruler as an absolute positioning system. Trapezoid-shaped magnetic areas are placed side by side, so that the resulting pattern enables a unique encoding of each position up to a micrometer level. The problem of finding a longest-possible ruler is formulated as a linear mixed-integer problem. We demonstrate how to approximate the magnetic signal, using measured data from Hall sensor cells.
