Numerical methods for combining bulk and surface partial differential equations

Abstract
I am motivated by applications where one wishes to solve coupled partial differential equations posed in both bulk domains and on curved surfaces: for example, a ligand-receptor model from cell biology. I will explore two different approaches using a Lagrangian fitted finite element method and an Eulerian unfitted finite element method. I will describe the methods in detail, provide rigorous numerical analysis results and provide some calculations.
