In this talk I will present a class of isoperimetric problems derived from Gamow's liquid drop model for the atomic nucleus, involving the competition of a short-range attractive force and a nonlocal repulsive potential. I will first introduce this model and give a (non-exhaustive) overview of some generalizations and results from the literature. I will then focus on the question of existence of large mass minimizers of this problem when the repulsive potential is given by an integrable kernel, sketch some of the proofs and discuss open problems.
