I will report analytical results on variational models that have been introduced in the physical literature to determine the shape of an epitaxially deposited film on a rigid substrate in the case in which the lattice parameters of the film and the substrate are incompatible. The nonlocal isoperimetric energy functionals take into account the strain energy induced by the crystallographic mismatch and a (sometimes anisotropic) surface energy of the film's free surface. The influence of a non-vanishing miscut angle will also be discussed. This talk is partially based on joint works with P. Bella and M. Goldman, and with I. Fonseca and A. Pratelli.
