A severe weakness in computational skills and understandings has been found among pre-service students in our Teacher Education Program. What to do about this problem? The paper will present some data showing the seriousness of the problem and then describe and discuss how the problem has been addressed, with some success. There will also be a discussion of the factors that have led to this difficulty. Problems similar to Arithmetic will be discussed with respect to geometry and algebra.
