Abstract
Artificial boundaries of computational domains for the Navier-Stokes equations should allow for simultaneous in- and outflow. A frequently used condition is the so called do-nothing condition (Heywood, Rannacher, Turek, 1996) which arises automatically in the cases of variational formulations due to partial integration of the full stress tensor. Although this boundary condition is useful in many configurations, the absence of stability has some theoretical and practical shortcomings. Development and analysis of modifications of this 'outflow' condition are important. This talk addresses recent results for the directional do-nothing condition for incompressible flows. We address in particular an a priori error estimate for stabilized finite elements. Moreover, we report on some numerical examples.
