Abstract
In 2010 the UK government set out sweeping reforms, aiming to raise England’s educational standards to match the world’s best. A key principle of the reforms is that schools themselves are best able to lead educational improvements. The NCETM, which is funded by the Department for Education (DfE), proposed that a school-led system to improve maths education would benefit from a national network of school-led ‘Maths Hubs’. The hubs could work regionally with schools, colleges, universities and employers to share good practice, coordinate work and provide a national structure to help implement government reforms in maths education in a coherent way. In the winter of 2013, the DfE agreed to the NCETM’s proposal and the Maths Hubs began work at the start of the following academic year, in September 2014. My presentation will explain how the Maths Hubs Programme was developed and discuss the NCETM’s long-term vision for school-led, evidence-based improvement in maths education in England.
